About John

John's story starts out on a cattle farm in the Northwest Province of South Africa. After finishing high school, John left home to work as a farmhand in Northcentral Wisconsin. Today, he continues raising cattle on his family farm in South Africa while touring and thriving as an Air Traffic Controller.

John has the musical sensibility found mostly in the American Midwest. His storytelling explores the characters and landscapes of both middle America and his native South Africa. His songs tell tales of ordinary people getting by, falling down, falling in love and getting lost. His stories are accompanied by voice and guitar in the spirit of Townes van Zandt and John Prine.

As a member of the folk trio called the Vagabonds & Brokenhearted Lovers, he maintains a steady touring and show schedule in venues big and small across the country — from  AARDKLOP National Arts Festival in Potchefstroom to farm shows. John can be found playing solo shows in intimate venues and coffee houses throughout Johannesburg and even in his other home, Wisconsin.
